after i was getting stupid wifi speeds (35ksec!) i decided to backup and then to factory reset. This kind of fixed the speed issue, so then i restored the backup I did on my 2.1 3g phone and it only restored 1 or 2 apps! i have about 20. Obviously theyre still in itunes so i need to resync now but it seems to me like the backup is so fast now as the only thing it is backing up are texts, and other basics. I dont have any contacts restored on the phone now either as these are all via mobile me and I thought the cheeky backup decided to not back these up due to this!?

to summarise, I backed up, restored, then i am ending up resyncing everything over again. Fair enough if it works like that but I was expecting an "imaged" backup? or at least backup all my Apps and App positions!? I dont mind resyncing all my contacts and photos but the App positions were a pain for me.

Haha! I'm the same way! I'm organized and it drives me NUTS when my apps are out of order. I block them together by type. Games together, GPS together, Flicker / Photo apps... You get the idea. Most likely some sort of OCD. :D

Exactly :) OCD!

But one would have presumed that when you do a backup, it would literally snapshot the iphone and a restore would bring it back to exactly how it looked before.

Great, the reinstall, restore resync sort of fixed my 35ksec fault, but now when i run the test on "testmyiphone.com" about 3 out of 5 times it CRASHES the reboots my 2.1 iphone! LOL.

i can't seem to get past this point on my first backup while installing 2.1! somebody pleaaaaaaaaasssssse help

I was having the same trouble. I think if you wait a while (could be a LONG while) it will eventually finish. Because I was on a plane and impatient, and I was getting an error that I wasn't connected, I forced the upgrade which skipped the backup process (I was scared I'd lose all my settings, but I didn't). If iTunes has already downloaded the update and you're stuck on the backup, you can cancel the process. Then:

1) Connect your iPhone
2) Hold down Option when you click "Check for Update"
3) Browse to Mac HD->Users-><you>->Library->iTunes->iPhone Software Updates and choose the file iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw

It will start the upgrade skipping the backup.

I had the same problem with my ipod touch a few days ago so I wasn't expecting anything different with the phone. For some reason the iphone backups are fine.

I don't know if this will help or not but here is what I did. First after the update to 2.1 I deleted all available backups. I then did a full restore at base, no apps, music, nothing.

Following this I did a backup, I then added a few apps and a single playlist. The apps I selected all contain data, pennies, things, gashog. I created some dummy data items and spaced the icons of different pages.

I then did a backup and full restore (DFU mode). The apps were back where they should have been and their data was intact. I noticed that following the restore the apps were installed AFTER the restore was complete.

I have been told that your music was part of the backup image, kind of makes sense. I think, just a guess, that the backup prior to 2.1 contained the full app image. In 2.1 that has been changed to just the data or difference from the base contained in the mobile apps image in itunes.

So, maybe the old backup images are the problem? Don't know.... I do want to play with the touch a little more to figure this out. I really don't want to test on the phone, had enough down time as it is.

Hey thanks "Thebearman" I appreciate all the info, I did have a quick look to see where the backups were stored on my mac but couldn't really find them (I tried the Library\Itunes\mobile backup but that is empty?).
I will have a look around the forums to see where the backups are and delete them then do a new backup now and see how it goes on future restores (I dont plan on restoring for a while now).
Thats what I thought and hoped that it backed up everything, including music (this again is good as I have a lot of lossless music in my itunes folder so run a script that temporarily converts some lossless music to AAC then syncs it to my iphone then deletes the AAC version from my itunes library).
The app positions would be good too lol :)

managed to find how to delete previous backups, Itunes Prefs (but would be good to see the actual file in finder to compare the file size against the iphone itself to see if it is going a full backup).

I finally got through the first backup before you install 2.1. I tried like 4 times and failed and finally, it went through this time after 2hrs and 22min. yay!! Hopefully, my future backups will be fast!:)

Just to be sure... are you guys talking about backup or about the entire sync process, out of which backup is only a part?

The actual backup is indeed much faster, but it's still talking forever to sync music, photos, contacts etc even though no data has changed since the last sync.

I did a backup earlier an it went so quickly that I could barely see the bar go across it was so quick.

the question should be: what the heck is it backing up now?
because I just restored my iphone and did a restore from a previous backup (right before the OS restore) and nothing was actually restored.

I mean, no app data, no texts, no settings, no codes, no bookmarks.. nothing. It's like if I had a new iphone.

It really sucks, I lost a lot of texts and a few photos on the camara roll.

I wasn't expecting this from apple.

nothing.. not even sms or basic settings like keyboard languages.

I have restored the mobilesyn folder from a time machine backup of last wednesday and i'm restoring the iphone now and will restore that backup from wed and see what happens.

I guess this is bad karma for trying to jailbreak my iphone :(

Let us know how restoring from another backup will go, I have to format my iPhone this week or next.

I think you're having a problem because there are backups for your previous iPhone in MobileSync. Delete everything in that folder and try again. My initial takes about 3 mins while subsequent backups are under 30 seconds.

Yes it did work with the backup I recovered from time machine.
The backup I was restoring on my iphone must have been corrupted or something.

What a relief..
