Alas, I believe the iPhone 2019 will look pretty much the same as the current X version.

Apple's just been lazy with phone hardware design innovation since years while Samsung surpassed them.

Now Samsung is moving on to a nearly all screen phone "Infinity O" with the upcoming Galaxy S10 and tiny bezels while iPhone will still have the somewhat thick bezels (yes those side & bottom bezels still looks like a case was put on IMO) and the notch.

It seems only in 2020 Apple will finally catch up.

I switched to Galaxy Note/S-line in 2013 and since then still waiting to switch back to iPhone but Apple hasn't impressed me enough to switch back.

And the sales numbers show this too and Apple stock tanking. For 4 years they went with the same iPhone design (with 6 introduction) and I really hope they won't do this again with the current X design but finally realize they have to innovate faster.

Not trying to defend anyone, but would you say the rest of the market is innovating?

At least with Apple you get updates and things seem secure and stable.
Most phones are approaching Apple's design with smaller or larger bezels. Samsung has a hole in their screens, otherwise most of the phones on the market are very similar.

Tried Android a couple of years ago and it felt as a "work-in-progress".

The 3 main challenges Apple must face are:
- Saturated market
- Lack of semi-budget models that are "new". This also goes for Mac. I actually wanted a new Mac and I was awaiting the Air, but I won't bother paying that much for a computer I do not need that badly.
- Prices are so high that fewer people want to pay for a new phone that often.

For the environment this must be a good thing?

It really makes me laugh when I here someone stating that the new X line has bezels that are too big.

We went from actually having big bezels......

Come on now. Hardly bezels at all!

Whilst the Galaxy S line of late has had almost no side bezels there is still bezels top and bottom, much bigger than the iPhones. Yet some people are ok with them

The more I read on Macrumors, the more I realize the term ‘Innovation’ is easily tossed around without really gathering the concept of what it means. Apple isn’t ‘lazy’ in terms of design, they’re just very conservative, which the iPhone 6 through 8 is a great example of that. They never of been about measuring up to the competition in everything they do, Apple really is their own entity and how they incorporate software and hardware features. Even if Samsung does things better than Apple, does that translate that it’s a ‘better’ phone? Not really. It’s just what _you_prefer, but one could make a counter argument that the iPhone is ‘better’ than Samsung. The argument goes both ways.

I have a friend who was thinking about upgrading her iPhone 7 to a XR. I showed her the XR in the Apple Store and she didn't like the notch. She said her brother told her that the notch is a temporary solution. I asked her about the enormous bezels on the iPhone 7 and said it could be argued that big bezels were also a temporary solution - as is all current technology. Nothing in tech is permanent. She just didn't get it and preferred her big bezels to the notch. I gave up.

what didnt she get? should she like the notch because you had an explanation having a notch in a phone?

i just got the battery replaced in my iphone 6s+ bacause i rather keep my old phone than stairing the uggly notch daily.

large bezels were always justifed to be so much better in iphones than android having almost bezeless phones... until apple introduced smaller bezels and the notch. now the notch is a justified magic unicorn and small hole in s10 is something horrible that should be avoided... until apple introduces the magic hole.

sorry, but the notch is fuggly - and it doesnt matter how you try to explain its existence. it is there and it is fuggly.

Sorry, I thought I had explained the issue. She didn't like the notch because she had been told it was a 'temporary solution' so she thought she'd wait until there was an iPhone without a notch. There are a lot of people who resist buying current technology and would rather wait until something better comes along - but it never does because there will always be something better on the horizon. Technology is constantly evolving.

I suppose I am assuming that a notch is better than large bezels at the top and bottom of your screen. It's introspection in that I can't imagine anyone preferring large bezels to a small notch. Ideally I'd rather not have a notch or bezels, of course.

Yes sure the top/ bottom parts were removed but now the overall bezels around the phone are still too thick imo. What has always bothered me about the iPhone was the thicker side bezels than on any other phone out there.

I'd rather have some bezel on top & bottom but very thin on the sides like on Galaxy phones.

Also the iPhone X bothers me in other ways too: The notch of course, it's thickness yet still has such a big protruding camera bump while the Galaxy S phones have flush cameras on the back not protruding. And I also think design wise it's a step back from the iPhone 6 design (except the front). To me the iPhone 6/ 6s/ 7 was beautiful on the back & sides and I loved the matte finish. This glossy stainless steel look on the sides and glossy glass finish (which I also don't like on other phone brands so much) makes it look cheesy & dated.

So yeah I'm really hoping for an all screen iPhone with super thin bezels and no notch just like the new Galaxy S10 line is most likely going to be but I'm afraid we have to wait for 2020 for this to happen.

From the rumors and reports it seems Apple won't give up the notch sooner because of the Face ID/ camera array on the front.

I think apple could have made the size bezels even thinner but decided to have more symmetrical look.

I have never even considered that the side bezels on the X series were thick. They have had zero impact on me. Coming from the Samsung Galaxy S9 I am pleased not to have that awful curved screen and zero side bezels where things keep happening because it's almost impossible to handle the phone normally without touching something on the screen. I've had loads of Android phones prior to the iPhone XS and for me there's absolutely nothing negative about the XS side bezels. People put quite substantial cases on their phones which reduces the screen width/overall width ratio.

Almost any case you might use reduces the camera protrusion to nothing anyway.

I gave up looking for problems a long time ago.

I’m sorry but there’s nothing thick about the bezels on the iPhone. You need some to feel confident heading the devices.

I also don’t think a hole is any better than a notch either.

I'd like to see Apple ditch the rounded sides. For iPhones 6-8, fine, that was a defining part of that design/series.

But knowing when the X came out that the phone would look more or less like that for four more long years, seeing the same old rounded iPhone 6 sides just in steel was a real "wtf, lazy" moment for me.

The notch needs to go.

It's never bothered me... Even on my most nitpick day.

Sorry, but the X design language is the sexiest I've ever seen on a phone.

I just want flat sides back, like the iPhone 4/5 had. (Like the new iPad Pro) and I’ll be happy.

I mean I love my Xs. But it’d be perfection with flat, brushed metal sides.

Something like this would be cool. But we all know this isn't going to happen for 2019 at the pace Apple's been doing their phone (re)designs.

I think 2019 is going to VERY boring year for both Apple and Android. That is because TSMC, the huge Taiwan semiconductor for SOCs said they're not going to 5nm "A12 is 7nm" until sometime in 2020. Basically hardware advances in 2019 will be pretty nonexistent until after 2020, with the exception of small architecture improvements. So expect only improvements in iOS at the most.

I wouldn't say boring for Android.

Look at all the "all screen" phones coming early 2019 including Galaxy S10.

Rumors are also that Samsung will incorporate their Graphene Battery tech in the S10 line which allows the battery to charge in only 12 minutes to 100% and last a lot longer. Would be something we've been waiting for to revolutionize the stagnant smartphone market of the past years. If that's true it would truly be a game changer. I'm a bit skeptic though and think it may only arrive later in 2019 with the Note 10 line or early 2020.

But looking at Apple's track record it may be indeed boring unless they realized that the poor sales numbers are a kick in the butt to hurry up and do more than a slight subtle update.

I don't. I remember the first iPods - I tried so hard not to think of a can of sardines when I looked at the design. Thankfully Apple gradually moved away from that paradigm - the iPhone 6 was quite a jump forward.

That would be a revolutionary game changer if true. I would buy it at full price. 12 minutes, when most fast chargers take 1:30-1:45 to fully charge from almost zero is insane!
