Hi guys, so I've just bought an iPhone 2G from eBay and I'm going to assume it has the latest 3.1.3 OS on it, what I would like to do is downgrade it to one of the original 1.x firmwares if possible, does anyone know the best way for me to do this?

Thanks in advance :)

Just because I'd like to have it on one of the original FWs where it ran fast as I wont be using the phone, it's just like a little collectors item for me :)

Yeah that's the reason why, I just want it on the original FW like when I had one on release, I'll take a look at that link though :) thanks

It truly does run about as well on 3.1.3 as it does on any other previous OS, and this is coming from personal experience having tinkered with MANY of these original iPhones.

Okay then, thanks for that, I'll give it a go when I get it and see how it is :) looking forward to getting a 2g again :D

I've tried to do the downgrade for similar reasons, no go beyond 2. Also you'll need an older copy of iTunes to get that far.

Awwwww that really sucks then :( I'll have a fiddle around with mine when I get it anyway and see which FW i like best :)

You couldnt pay me to use an iphone 2G again:D

Ha I only really wanted one for nostalgics and collection reasons really, I just always remember it being an amazing phone and Wanted to have a go on one again :) it's obviously not going to be my primary phone but it will be fun to play with :)

Ah, you guys are killing me!
When it comes to texting and phone calls my original iPhone is surprisingly as quick as my 4S.

I agree, my phone was stolen a while back and I used my 2G as a temp phone while I saved up for the replacement. With the exception of lack of storage and 3G it was perfectly fine to use, snappy, and felt great. Like those who feel like anything over 8GB on a phone is stupid, there are those who will cling to the idea that just because something is over 2 years old it doesn't function anymore. I guess I should trash my TV, NGC, PS2, PSP, PS3 Rev 1.1 MBP and Wii since they are all older than the iPhone 2G and couldn't possible work any more.

No apps on this phone (that's what my 4S and iPad are for). It is strictly a phone (with music).

I'm going to try that. Go down to 2.2.1. I really want to use it for Navigon when i'm biking so I can find things and not kill my 4S battery.

EDIT: Take that back. Forgot my the 2G doesn't have GPS!! DOH!! LOL

Haha :p I always thought it did..I finally got my iPhone 2G anyway, it came on 3.1.3, not got round to downgrading it yet though but found some good (but slightly sketchy) instructions to downgrade to 1.0..not got round to trying it yet though

I was able to get it down to 1.1.1 but couldn't activate the thing :-/ tried for ages and in the end I gave up and ended up upgrading it to 2.2.1, might try again tomorrow to see if I can get it working properly on 1.1.1 and possibly lower :)

iPhone 2G? Never heard of it. Heard of an iPhone, iPhone3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4... Did I miss it? :D

Just getting to 2.2.1 was hard enough though tbh..I'm running baseband version [04.05.04_G] and I originally wanted to downgrade directly to 1.1.1 and to do this I installed iTunes 7.5 on Windows XP and tried to restore using a downloaded .IPSW file, this failed and left me with a phone which wouldn't activate for some reason :-/ so then I decided to restore back to 3.1.3 so that I can downgrade to 2.2.1 (simply upgrading directly to 2.2.1 didn't work) so I tried to upgrade to 3.1.3 using the latest version of iTunes on my Mac and that failed too with the iTunes error 1603, so now I just decided to find out which version of iTunes would support 2.2.1, I found out iTunes 8.1.1 would do the trick so I installed this on my Windows XP partition, put my phone into recovery mode and then just restored it as normal, this put 2.2.1 onto my phone which is currently working fine and activated just fine too..

Tomorrow I will probably try to get it onto a lower version as I said, just posted all this as to keep anyone updated in case anyone was interested :)
