I have the iPhone 2G atm and was recently given a 3G by a friend who no longer needed it.

Will I automatically be charged if I trade out his old sim card, which is deactivated, with my working sim card from at&t? Because they will know that I am using their 3G service on a 2G plan?

If anyone has done this or knows about this question, I'd appreciate the help.

    Thanks

Did this with my wife's phone. I got a text the next day on her phone.

It appears you are using a 3G on a 2 data plan. Please contact AT&T immediately to avoid any overage charges.

I am sort off paraphrasing the first part...but that's he meat of it.

    Okay I see, thanks.

Did you keep using it and get charged? Or did you take it out and contact them?

I called as soon as I got the text. We where on vacation and she was using the Internet alo to find stuff and what not. So they just converted her plans from the $20 data plan to the $30 3G plan. Like I said earlier, it was very quick from the time I put the card in the 3G and got the text. Fortunately, there where no usage charges. Just a big fat, "I told you so!" from my wife.
