iPhone 2g simcard unlock ONLY

Hi guys,

I bought a 2g iphone from a friend of mine and as i am a newbie on this iphone hacking stuff i want to know if i can only unlock the iphone to use any simcard without jailbreak to use other apps.

I saw some tutorials on iclarified and using redsnow with 3.1.3 if i only check the unlock option (without installing cydia and others) will this only unlock the simcard on the iphone?

I dont know if i was clear but at this point i want a "clean" way to just unlock the phone to any carrier.

You don't have to install Cydia, but you must jailbreak to unlock. Redsn0w would be the simplest solution.
