    Hi.

I ma just about to receive my first iPhone, a 2G version and not having researched a lot about it before, I would like to know what are my best first steps in getting as much out of it as possible.
First, it needs to get 3.0 OS, which it probably already has.
I suppose it needs to be jailbroken as well if it isn't already (it's second hand so probably already is) and then what?
There is so much info on the web about the iPhone that it's difficult to filter the right info, for instance:
    1. I hear about Cydia being the alternative to app store for jailbroken apps. A popular choice?
    2. What's the best source to learn al the multi-touch/gesture tricks? Shaking, pinching, tapping etc what else?
    and so on.

Is there a nice step-by-step guide that introduces to all things iPhone?

Some things don't apply to the 2G but it's a good place to start.

Yes, make sure you're on 3.0.

i'd say get to know the phone in its "out of the box" state before you worry about jailbreaks and cydia and such stuff, it's a good phone as it is. If there is then something you specifically want to do that needs jailbreak, you'll be better prepared if you already know your way around the phone.

Once you want to know more about the "dark side", start here:

    Thanks for the reply.

I will of course go through the included manual and all the built in features that are supported by Apple.

But what I am most interested in is features that Apple won't tell me about such as tethering etc, so thank you very much for letting me know about icarified.com. Unfortunately the site seems down at the moment (SQL problem), can you recommend another place?

iclarified is working...honestly I wouldn't get my hopes up tethering on ATTs or TMobile's Edge network...slow as molasses...your mileage may vary.

    Cheers.

Yup, iclarified is working now again.
I'm in UK, so the speeds and coverage are a little better, but I only need to download/send emails occassinally and I honestly don't see myself typing a lot on Iphone however great it might be...
