iPhone 2G unlocked for China visit. What about data service?

I'm visiting china sooon and I'll have my iPhone unlocked with me. My question is, will I be able to use data for email with my prepaid sim card? Or is that for talk only?

Look for GSM prepaid cards that include a certain amount of data.
Or use data when on wifi.
