so my brothers iPhone 2g is old and is dying just died today and i had to DFU restore it. i think we pay $20 for data for it? w family text plan and stuff.

my question is his contract has ended and he is waiting for iPhone 5 or watever which we all know is coming. is there way to jailbreak/unlock it and not pay for data? or just use it with expired contract til iPhone 5??

Suggestions? i also have 2 other lines that are due for upgrade, upgrade them? or wait til June and maybe Sprint???

Yes, the 2G can be used with no data and they wont automaticly add one to your account.
You can even call them yourself and block/turn off data on it.

really? so i just call them and say cancel the data on that line and boom? everything still works like phone calls?

He might lose his ability to get grandfathered into his unlimited data though

I have a prepaid SIM from ATT - that works as well. Also I have used SIMs from other countries as well - all as long as you have unlocked the phone. The iPhone 2g is now my reserve phone.
