Sorry if this has been discussed, I could not find anything relevant.

I have a 3G (with Apple's remote app) and an ATV. It works, but I cannot browse the "shared" content. If I use the ATV remote and start some streaming content I can then control the movie from the iPhone, but when I browse, nothing shows.

    Can someone clue me in?

I will double check mine when I get home tonight, but I think I could browse through my shared videos.

Just checked and I can definitely browse through the shared content without a problem. Just to make sure you are looking in the right area you go to the more tab and simply look under the Movie or TV Show depending on where you have the video in iTunes. Unlike through the AppleTV which shows the shard library, the iPhone just sees the streamed content as part of the AppleTV.

In a post that helped me from "ankushpatel"

"yeah sure mate, this is what you do.

make sure you have the new itunes!

go to preferences and then advanced

select, look for remote speakers with airtunes

and allow itunes to control from remote speakers
also look for iphone & ipod touch remotes.

then on your apple tv i think its under general preferences make sure u have airtunes on.

then open up ur itunes library, make sure u have ur iphone working with the apple tv, and select ur itunes libarary on ur comp from ur phone and on itunes bottom right u should see ur apple tv make sure that is selected. ur good to go then."

Now I only use this for music, but I hope it helps.

I have this same issue. the only thing that I have stored on my ATV is music. I have all of my video content streaming to the ATV from my iMac. With the iPhone remote I can only browse and play the music that I have stored on the ATV hard drive. I can not break out my iPhone and use it to start a video because all of my video content is streaming to the ATV. As far as I can tell, the remote function on the iPhone is only good for playing stuff that is located on your hard drive and not being streamed.

Am I correct in saying this or is there something that I am missing? All I want to do is use the remote on my iPhone to search through and play my movies that I have streaming to my ATV.

I have the same issue... Here I was thinking it was just me..

Seems that the iphone can only control the playback of streamed audio from my remote itunes library and not video. The iphone can play stuff that I synced to the Apple TV, but with the super small drives on the Apple TVs, it doesn't take long before synching is pointless because your library wont fit....

Well, at least the little white remote lets you choose the shared library content without the drama. Apple really needs to address this or I just need to get a clue here....

With the Apple TV 2.0+ Updates, I found it best to setup syncing vs. streaming, but don't actually sync anything unless you want to.

    Let me break it down:

In iTunes, select custom sync after you have set ATV up for syncing not streaming. Then uncheck the only show synced items. After that, if you want to sync certain items to the ATV you can be clicking through the tabs along the top and selecting your videos, music, photos, etc.

Now, when you go to ATV, you will see the movies under my movies (both synced to ATV HD and still on your computer) vs. shared. I have had no issues with this and it seems to work great with the Apple Remote. I don't actually sync anything besides photos, but I did play around with it a little and confirmed that content that is synced to ATV HD and movies that you left on your computer do not interfere. You will see all the items in the same list. ATV will just read the ATV HD if you actually synced that item vs. pulling it over the network from your computer. If you shut down computer, you will only see items synced to ATV HD in the list until you turn computer back on and open iTunes.

    Hope this helps.
