My friend gave me their old iPhone 3G to see if I could fix any of its numerous problems.

The phone:

  • Has two cracks in the back.
  • 's SIM tray will not properly eject.
  • 's power button is jammed in, though it still works.
  • 's vibrate switch snapped off.

When I got it, it was on 3.1.3. I upgraded it to 4.1 and jailbroke with Redsn0w.

I tried installing iDroid to test it out, but it told me I didn't use one of the required JB tools.

I tried restoring again, and now it is stuck in recovery mode. When I try restoring it iTunes gives me the 1603 error. Is there anything I can use to get out of this? Thanks.

It might be a hardware issue then.
Try another usb wire and usb port on your computer to make sure its not that.

you may have hosed your etc/hosts file.

Do a search of for the "etc/hosts" file and make sure the following IP address is commented out as follows:

# below is only useful if using external server to 'fake' apple verification
# typically used with jailbroken iphones
# Comment the below IP address out if connected iPhone is not jailbroken
# prior to restoring iPhone software
#74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

Not saying it'll work , but this is what got my iPhone restorable again.
