iPhone 3G (Japan) won't vibrate on incoming emails

Can't get my iPhone to vibrate on incoming emails (Japan uses real email instead of SMS text). I have the master switch set to silent, and emails switched to "off" in the sounds settings, with vibrate turned to "on" in those settings.

Nonetheless, the phone simply won't vibrate when I receive an email, and I can't figure out why. I've tried multiple different sound settings combinations and still, it won't vibrate on an incoming email.

    Tips?

Are you talking about the SoftBank email notification screen? There is no notification other than the visual. Pretty lame, huh?

OTOH, since you seem to care about using "real email," you'd probably find MobileMe more to your liking. MobileMe mail can be 'pushed' to your phone, so you get it instantly - and it will notify you with a sound/vibrate. :)

Man if that's true that really, really sucks. I got really tired of my last Docomo phone not vibrating on emails (even though it was set to) and now I have to live with it again? Goddamnit. Why is this such a hard feat for cell phone manufacturers to accomplish?

Don't blame Apple - blame SoftBank. Their half-***ed implementation of what has LONG been a global standard (IMAP!) is enough to leave you wondering if their engineering team is actually staffed by trained monkeys. When the iPhone first launched, the server retention was 30 days, meaning all emails would automatically be purged after 30 days. WTF, right?? They soon corrected that lovely little problem but still have not quite figured out how to get emails to push. It has worked perfectly for me since July 11th of last year, using MobileMe - but SoftBank still can't figure it out.

My advice? Use a REAL email account, hosted by anyone but SoftBank. ;)
