I have an iPhone 3g, when I make a call the screen does not turn off which means that while I'm talking the screen is still active and I can press the mute or speaker button with my cheek.

    Its really frustrating.

I've tried changing the firmware and have just updated to the latest 2.2 from iTunes.

I'm convinced that its a hardware problem, but don't really want to send it off. I have opened it up to have a look but can't see anythign wrong.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be??

    Thanks

I assume that you are not using a case which is covering up the proximity sensor. That not being the case, this would be a hardware issue and I do know of people having this problem. You will have no problem getting this replaced at an Apple Store (assuming one is near you) or your phone carrier.
