iPhone 3G screen randomly not responding, proximity sensor issue?

My iPhone 3G screen randomly stops responding to touch. To get it to respond again I have to lock and unlock the screen, however I have discovered that if I cover my fingers over the proximity sensor the screen responds again as well. I have also noticed that the proximity sensor doesn't lock the screen during a call... any ideas or advice?
