I've noticed today that my iPhone 3G 8GB only shows up as 6.83GB. Now this iPhone was swapped from Apple, my old one had a malfunctioning volume button. But the old one had 7.06 GB or something like that if I recall. Why would there be a difference, they're essentially the same model.

Apple always like to upgrade your firmware to the latest whenever you have dealings with them.

A loss of 1.17GB shouldn't really be a concern to you, although I do believe the new OS 3.0 is a lot larger than 2.2.1.

Consider yourself lucky, however, as I have a 16GB iPhone 3G of which I can only use 14.6GB.;)
