On Wednesday, September 9th (to our best guesses) the new iPod Touches will be announced with cameras and video recording capability at a lower price point (some say it could be as low as $149 for the 8GB model).

So what are the chances that Apple will pull the iPhone 3G for good? It doesn't make sense that they will offer an iPhone model that is lacking a feature that the iPod Touch has, especially at such a similar price point.

If it means a price drop in the 3GS or the introduction of an 8GB 3GS, that would be great. I put the latter in the 'may happen' category for September 9th.

It probably depends on the levels of existing sales.

Highly unlikely, I'd have thought. O2 are about to lose their exclusive UK iPhone status, apart from the 3GS, which must mean that the new carriers will offer the 3G.

Unless of course, there is a new one coming out v. soon, which the others will have, leaving O2 with the 3G-S..!

Yup, they're discontinuing both the 3G and the 3GS next month. They will be releasing a new device which I can not name here, but mainly it's intention is to piss off those that must have the newest device and force them to purchase this new one eventhough their current device is perfectly fine.

I've already said too much, hopefully The Steve doesn't beat me too bad this time.

    Doubt it.

While it's great for customers, it's bad for Apple. Most people would just buy the 8gb rather than forking out for the 16gb, since most don't have 8gb+ of music. Currently they have to get the 16gb if they want all of the other iPhone 3GS features (speed, camera, voice control etc.).

The 3g won't be discontinued. O2 won't have exclusivity on the original 3g but will continue to do so on the 3gs. Apple are opening up the 3g to other networks.

Sales have been pretty good for the 8gb since the $99 price drop. However, after years of following Apple, that doesn't mean anything. Steve Jobs will likely wake up in the next few weeks and decide the fate of the 8gb 3G over ham and eggs for breakfast.

On what do you base your assertion that most people who own an iPhone don't have more than 8 GB of music? What then explains the proliferation of devices capable of storing 60+ GB of music? I would hazard a guess that most people under 40 who've owned an iPod have well in excess of 8 GB of music stored on their computers.

They won't be getting anywhere near the iPhone on Wednesday's event. If ever, it's gonna be iTunes 9 and how it'll sync 'faster' with the iPhone and all iPod's.

Other than that, I don't think they'll mention the iPhone..

Not trying to defend his stand on the 8gb v. 16gb, but I would say that more people do have more than 8gb of music, videos, pictures, etc. But, they're not going to carry all of that with them on a portable device. I would imagine a large percentage, maybe even the majority of people with an iPhone also have an iPod as well.

I have over 40gb of media, but why in the world would I want to carry all that media with me all the time? With apps like Simplify Media, it makes it even less of a need to have the larger capacity. Yes, I do understand that some people do want to carry all of their media with them wherever they go. But I don't think they make up all that much. Unfortunately, I have no numbers to back this up so take this as an uneducated, observed opinion.

Okay then. Some people do not have 8gb+ of music. Even if it was a low percentage, say 20%. That's 20% of however many millions are looking to buy an iPhone 3GS who would now spend $99 instead of $199.

And the above is hypothetical. I still stand by my theory that most iPhone buyers wont have 8gb+ of music. I have no proof to back it up with, it's just a guess.

This is all assuming they could even sell an iPhone 3GS for $99 + contract.

What about the sightings at Rogers website about the iPhone 3GS 8GB? It will be possible to keep it at 99 bucks for 8 gigs. Some people need 16, some don't but all in all they would like the new features.

Im not going to sit on here and spill about what I think might happen, but being that the 9th is 2 days away, all I can say is, wait it out, and see for yourself. I hope that they do not discontinue it, but maybe drop the price even more, then the 3gs price may be dropped and I can actually afford it lol
