I have an iPhone 3G, it's actually been idle for a while. It has Version 2.1 (5f136) and Modem Firmware 02.11.07.

However, seems to me I have to get copies of different versions of the iphone O/S and I don't know where to go for that.

I did some google searches and there are some people that claim to have .ipsw files out there --- but --- I'm not sure if there is a fairly trustworthy source of those out there?

I'm assuming I'll need 2 versions - maybe 3.0 to update the modem, and then 3.1.2 applied while preserving the modem firmware...

Any tips? I've seen quite a few people post after they've had a problem ...

You are correct.
Update to official 3.0 and then update to custom pwned 3.1.2 preserving the 04.26.08 baseband.
