iPhone 3G Won't Update OS

Trying to get the new update to OS4.2 but whenever I click UPDATE I get the following message;
"This version of iTunes (9.2.1) is the current version."
Running Mac OSX 10.4.11 on an older G4 tower.
Any suggestions would be helpful, though I'm hearing this update doesn't do much for my device anyway.
