Hi, I bought a iphone last week and after a week of use, it shut down suddenly yesterday. No warning. did not turn on while holding down the power button. I was finally able to turn it on while pressing the power button with the home button for about 10 sec. Any ideas on what happened?

Don't know, go to Apple Store and tell them about it. Haven't heard of this issue before.

Sounds like it crashed and a hard reset kicked it back to life.

Could be anything from dodgy software to dodgy hardware...

Mine did that last week. Got very very hot too. I'm going to get it swapped out (was going to anyway, the screen has probs)

My first 3GS did that 4 times over a month so just the other day I exchanged it for a new one that hasn't done it yet. Might be software if more people are having this problem.

Mine did this last week. Freaked me out. I held the Home and Power buttons and it rebooted. Strange.

They didn't give you a hard time about replacing the iPhone?

This happens from time to time on ALL models of the iPhone. If it seems too frequent, and you can't attribute to any ONE App, then try to get it exchanged. You have 14 days, I think, to get an easy swap out.

They didn't give you a hard time about replacing the iPhone?

I called Apple yesterday around noon saying my phone was extremely hot and doing strange things. They didn't give me any hassle at all and said they'd ship me a replacement.

Got it at 8:30 am today. And I'm in Canada! 20 hour shipping time across the US/Canada border is very impressive!

If only Switcheasy were paying attention....

BTW - The shipping box said "product of China" and the phone came in a black "phone only" box....I'm thinking it's new and not refurbed/reserialized. Won't know for sure until I open it up at home though (at work now).

How long did you have the one they replaced? They didn't tell you to go to an Apple Store?

Ordered on release date, and received it about 3 days later...so...I dunno...4/5 weeks?

They tried to book a Genius for me at my local Apple store but they were booked solid for the week and could only offer me a "standby" appointment where I could be waiting for an hour or more.

I told them I don't have time to do that because I have to catch a train to get home after work, so they told me they'd just do an advanced replacement.

iPhone resurrected

Happened to me too. Picked up the phone and nothing. Not even holding down the top and bottom, plugging into iTunes, plugging into the charger, or removing the SIM card. About 30 minutes later, holding down the top and bottom brought it back to life. After a lengthy phone conversation with a product specialists, who said it was the processor backing up and shutting down, I decided to take a wait and see approach. holding open my option to get a new one. I also had the issue with the camera roll not displaying pictures, but a restore fixed that. Advice?? Should I just get a new phone? Only up to two strikes. A third will be the clincher.

I have never been this scared. Looking at a brand new iphone 3GS that I got off ebay. Was showing off to my coworkers and it just died.

luckily i read this thread and the phone is revived.

however, I am unable to get a new iphone from apple, so do you folks think its a hardware issue or software? maybe I can just upgrade the software and that will resolve it?

To replace or not to replace?

Bought iphone 3gs on 31 Aug 09 and it just died (completely blank and won't turn on) Saw this thread and holding down the buttons as advised helped - cheers for that! Should I take the phone back for a replacement ??? Is this a sign it's going wrong ?? Has anyone else experienced this, if yes should I insist on a replacement?

I have a 3 week old 3gs that has overheated and died totally. it refuses to charge on 3 pcs or the mains charger. The hard reset will not work.
Quite frankly I suspect a duff batch. I am traveling and have lost all my contacts and appointments till I return to base.

nearest apple store is two hours away, I cant get it swapped till sat, only got 1 cd in the car. (and welsh radio!) Before it died it was running very hot.

I am now using my two year old HTC which I must point out is still working 100% I just cant configure the net as O2 is... weird.

3GS died

Hi all, I have now had 2 3GS'S that have died, in both cases they were brand new phones! It's not only annoying but also very inconvenient, I have not backed them up as often as I should have because I have problems with my laptop, therefore I have lost a lot of information and pics.
Needless to say I tried all the usual things but nothing worked, each time.
I am very worried that my 3rd phone may die too, is this just bad luck or is it a bad batch, so to speak?
I have to say Apple have been great so far!
Anyone else had more than one die on them?

this happened to my original 3GS one time at work. screen and back got really hot. I quickly turned the phone off. was unable to get the phone back on and would get to the apple logo, and 5 seconds later shut off. got scared as hell so I took it out of the case it was in and let it sit until I got home. got it home, found out to just hold the home button and put in the usb cable and put it in recovery mode and restored the phone to the latest firmware. thought my iphone was going to die :( but it has worked great ever since! maybe something with that processor and additional ram caused it to overheat.

Iphone suddenly died

Dear frends, this happened to me as well, my Iphone suddenly died, no reaction to charging or sincking!! This always comes on the wrong moment. I followed a tip given on this site and Yes it worked! Holding down the Start/ Boot button at the top and the round homing button for 10 secs.

Perhaps sometimes when it recieves texts and sends E-MAILS out whilst navigating Apps on the phone it gets confused. So thanks a lot for this tip!!! lama thubwang

Try.......... lol JK Bro

My iPhone 3GS died too - after only one year

Mine died today and was out for four hours. Found the answer here though, hold down both buttons for ten seconds, However, it took another two minutes before it suddenly came back to life.

I doubt if I will be here much longer, I will be selling my iphone on Ebay once I get a new phone from another manufacturer that is not as restrictive as apple.

SOD Apple!:p
