My wife's old 3Gs iPhone is on iOS 5.1.1. I notice it can be updated to 6.1.2. I'm wondering if upgrading the software will slow it down and that I should leave it on 5.1.1. Or will it improve the performance somewhat upgrading it ?

Will not change it. My wife and son both have 3GS and are running 6.1.2. I do all the updates and tech things on the phones. I have seen absolutely no difference in performance since updating them months ago. I have also heard no complaints from either my wife or son. They seem to perform exactly the same as they did when they were running 5.1.1.

I'd leave it. 5.1.1 was better anyway. iOS6 has Apple Maps rather than google and removes the embedded YouTube. I upgraded my iPad and subsequently left my 4 on 5.1.1.
