Hello! I haven't posted a thread here in forever, but I do need some MacRumors help now. First off, I already searched the first page of this forum and mroogled "iphone 3g only using edge data". Basically, my problem is that my iPhone 3GS is only using Edge data (an E in the top left corner, and noticeably slower internet speeds). I'll restate everything that happened around the time when it stopped working in case it'll help.

Yesterday, I went with my family to go to the beach in Canada (we live in the United States). I brought my iPhone (black, 32 GB, bought in early July) with me as usual. I don't often use headphones, but I brought the included headphones with me so I could listen to my iPod during the car ride and on the beach. I put my headphones in, put on some Sufjan Stevens, and expected everything to go fine. Instead, the sound came out the speaker. Thinking it was a simple problem, I blew some air into the headphone jack, tried my sisters headphones, and still couldn't get the iPhone to output sound through the headphones. I did a quick Google search and decided to reset the settings of my iPhone. I did that, and the headphones worked. Fine. Later, while almost at the border (no more than 10 minutes from my house, definitely not enough to go out of a coverage zone), I wanted to check Facebook and noticed I was using Edge data. I thought this was weird, but forgot about it when I turned off data due to the fact that I was "switched over" to Rogers Wireless in Canada. However, even after we came home, the Edge data never went away. This is a full day later, and there are still no signs of 3G data coming my way.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I have an Apple Store not too far from my house, and it wouldn't be a hassle to go there soon. But I use 3G on my phone a lot, and this is relatively irritating. So, any "at home" remedies will be very helpful. Thanks!

Try a DFU restore then and restore from a backup.

I figured resetting network settings would work for you, since you had no problem until you reset all settings. If the restore doesn't work, maybe you've got a hardware issue. There have been problems reported with wifi for the 3GS. You can take it back to the store if the restore doesn't work. They'd ask if you did that anyway.
