I've looked at several sites tonight but I'm having a bit of an issue pinning down an exact answer. I'm looking to unlock my 3GS so I can use it on another carrier.

I'm running the latest iOS (4.3.1) so I hope that's not a problem. The phone is not currently jail broken and I have no idea what an ssh blob is, but I am a computer programmer so I just need a gentle push in the right direction.

Any help is appreciated

Well- First off, See if your provider will do an IMEI Unlock for free (Worth a shot..)

Also check out f0recast. I don't think they'd have an unlock for 4.3 out right yet as not even an untethered jailbreak is out.

Base on your provided information, your phone has 05.10 baseband which can't be at the moment.

Iclarified.com, Redmondpie.com and jailbreakmatrix.com can give you lot of information you need about jailbreaking/unlock.

AT&T will not provide IMEI unlock for Iphone even your contract is fulfilled. I am not sure where your info come from but this is wrong.

The OP didn't mention where he/she was located. In other countries, some carriers allow you to unlock your phone through them.

Apparently Telus will unlock your phone for $50, provided some conditions are met i.e. contract has been over for 90 days, balance on account is paid in full - and a few others.

I'll try them and see what they can do.

Same boat. I bought my wife's iPhone 3gs last August and at the the time, the latest firmware was able to be jailbroken and unlocked (we're using on t-mobile). Lately the phone's been freezing up a lot and does have applecare but the prob is that we can't take it in until the latest FW is both able to be jailbroken and unlocked in case they swap it out.

Her phone is currently Version 4.0 (8A293) / Modem Firmware 05.13.04

from the dev_team blog about the ipad baseband. read and understand before doing it!

WARNING — YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! PLEASE UNDERSTAND THE CONSEQUENCES OF UPDATING TO 06.15.

There is no way to come back down from 06.15, and there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple. You’ll be voiding your warranty in a very obvious way.
If some future baseband comes out with a critical fix, you won’t be able to update to it if it remains down in the 05.xx sequence (then again, you wouldn’t update to it if you wanted to keep your unlock anyway).
Starting with FW 4.2.1 if you have 06.15 on your iPhone you won’t ever be able to restore to stock firmware (it will fail). You’ll need to only restore to custom IPSWs (then again, if you’re unlocker you should already be doing that).

Unlockers have been reporting mixed results about GPS functionality at 06.15.00. Until we can track down what differentiates those who retain GPS vs. those who lose it, be conservative and assume you’ll lose GPS at 06.15.00. As we work on finding the cause (and possibly a fix), please report your personal findings in our comments section. (Update: early indications are that while 06.15.00 is capable of GPS, it will require some further hacks. But please still be conservative and assume you will lose GPS at 06.15, in case the hacks don’t work).

Certainly don’t update to 06.15 if you don’t need to! Only do this if you need the unlock and you’re stuck on 05.14 or 05.15, and you’re willing to assume the above risks.
