I want to get the Iphone 3GS because the 4 doesn't look as good, but does it run the latest software slow?

Of course it runs it great, i even heard the 3G is usable in 4.2.1. The 3GS will have better framerates (itll run faster) in most games compared to the iPhone 4.

Yep, i found my iphone the same speeds as my friends iPhone 4 and the ipod touch 4 i tested in store today.

I have the 3GS and it runs great on 4.2.1 and that includes battery performance.

Have my 16 GB 3GS and haven't turned away- runs and works perfect. My buddies all have 4's and TBH, i am content with what I have.. I don't justify an early termination fee just to say I have an iPhone 4. iOS 4.2 runs no issues with my S.
Don't be hesitant.. just do it! :)

Bare in mind the screen resolution is a lot lower on the 3GS. (Irrelevant to your question, but may deter from the "looks better" point).

What are you confused about. The iPhone 4 uses the same graphics processor but the resolution doubles, of course performance will go down..

haha fail
you obviously don't know that iPhone 4 uses the new Apple A4 processor(cortex A8+SGX535). Although 3gs also uses A8+SGX535, the A8 is clocked way slower than iphone4(4: 800mhz-1ghz vs 3GS: 600mhz). iPhone 4 also has 2X memory (512mb) compared to 3GS (256mb).
I currently have 3GS
When I ran 3.1.3, free memory with no apps running is usually 150mb
but when i upgraded to 4.1 free memory is usually 120mb sometimes even less.
Some applications took longer to open, but other took less time to open.

Overall, 3GS would be OK, but it would be outdated in 1 year when iPhone 5 comes out.

HAHA Fail. You obviously don't know what you're talking about. I know about the hardware thanks, and the A4 is not a "new processor". The A4 is a SoC( system on a chip) Which only lowers power consumption, allows higher clock speeds, and a smaller fabrication. Also allows it all to be on one die. That's it. Its nothing new. the Cortex A8 in the 3gs is clocked at 600Mhz, the iP4 is 800Mhz. The SGX 535 is clocked at 200Mhz in both phones which is why the 3GS is faster in many intensive games, Modern Combat is a great example, because of the lower resolution. Extra ram isn't going to help an application that doesn't need it so that is a useless point. Next time test out **** yourself before you ramble about stuff.
A faster cpu isnt gonna help at all if you are already gpu bottlenecked.

It is true, Modern Combat 2 black pegasus is much smoother on a 3GS than on a 4, same goes for Hero of Sparta 2 and other games. Ace134blue has pretty much explained it!
