iPhone 3gs turn off cellular data

Will the iPhone 3gs will work fine for placing calls and text with cellular data turned off ?

I assume that with cellular data turned off it will use no cellular data, is this correct ?

The phone will be on an ATT number with no plan.

Just FYI, ATT does no allow smartphones on the network without a data plan.
