iPhone 3GS - used pricing advice?

I've been seeing Used Unlocked iPhone3GS's selling on a popular auction site for over $1000. What's the catch? Are these prices really what i would expect to sell my used 16GB 3GS for if i simply unlock it?

$1000+ is really high and probably the winning bid wont even pay for it or try to pull a scam on the seller.
Even factory unlocked 3GS models are cheaper than that.
Find out some other more reasonable prices and auctions to get a general idea.

A used iPhone 3GS in good condition should go for around $300-$350 on eBay.

I sold my 16GB 3GS for $400 on a local website I thought I came out very good. It was also unlocked 3.1.2.
