iPhone 3gs with iPad help

Currently my iPhone 3gs is on version 4.1. I want to jailbreak so i can use mywi for my iPad. What version do I need to just jailbreak, update all the way or am I set. Also what program on my mac do I use?

I tried some guides but did not get it to work now I am on the stock 4.2 iOS

To jailbreak your iPhone on 4.1 there are to jailbreak apps to use LimeRa1n or GreenPois0n.

Now since you're on 4.2.1, Redsn0w will be your only option.
