My 3GS, running iOS4 = 14.28GB. iPhone 4, 14GB. I can live with that.

Of course you ae talking about available capacity on your 16GB phone. This thread is about a COMPLETELY different thing. You need to actually READ!

I tried posting this issue on the iPhone 4 forum on Apple's site and got the most ridiculous responses. One guy even told me I must have DROPPED the phone!

Boy oh boy - why do I ever bother to post anything there. That forum has got to be an embarrasment to Apple.

i'm with you Tony... but to late for me now. i'm actually in the process of changing most my music to 128 in my iTunes and hopefully that helps for whatever reason. i'm also hoping for some sort of update whether it be iPhone or iTunes in the near future. i dig the new 4, but REALLY wish they would have came out with a 64GB!

Did this work?

Also, has anyone else that uses the 128 kbps conversion option installed OS 4 on their 3GS phone and experience this same issue?

i finally got done changing all my songs in my library to 128 and it's still the same.

I downloaded Dexter Season 4 from iTunes directly on my iPhone 4. However, it keeps telling me that I don't have enough space left to download the season (about 9 GB). I already had about 8 GB still free. So, I deleted one movie (1.5 GB), a 16-episode season of another show (about 10-11 GB), and it still said I didn't have enough space left. Finally, I deleted just one more episode of another show (700 MB), and there we go!

Now, riddle me this... I plug my iPhone back into my computer after it's done downloading the season, and it says I have over 11 GB free. Why did it need 20 GB of space (9 GB for the season + extra 11 GB) to download 9 GB?

Artwork

Hi,

I had the same issue. In my case syncing 2 phones, a 3gs and a 4 from same mac/same itunes/both 128 option/same everything. The 3gs had 5gb more free space than the 4.

I downloaded a tool to mount the iPhones as disks and had a look at the contents, and the only difference in size is the artwork folders. I later confirmed this w/ applecare. After they escalated a couple of levels to figure this out (did all the normal restores etc), they confirmed that on the old iPhones the artwork is scaled down, but on the 4 it's left at a higher resolution (since the screen has better resolution).

Note: you can confirm that it's not the music files, if you expand the iphone in the iTunes device list and click on music. In my case it shows approx 19GB there, but on the audio capacity bar it showed 25GB. The difference is that audio capacity bar shows music, ringtones and artwork.

Guess only option is to either remove the artwork, or hope that apple adds an option to have "low" quality artwork on the iPhone 4.
