A friend of mine owns an iPhone 4. He was from carrier X and recently cancelled that contract and got a new line from carrier Y. Problem is the iPhone is locked to the previous carrier and they ask for €260 in order to unlock it.

I've checked myimeiunlocked but there's no option for that carrier (We're from Spain).

So, my question is:

Can I jailbreak this iPhone 4 even if it's on 6.1.3? And if so, what do I gotta do in order to let him use another carrier once it's jailbroken?

Thank you very much.

You can jailbreak it, yes. It will be tethered though. Although, I think you are confused between unlocking and jailbreaking.

Jailbreaking allows customization of the iPhone. In order to use it on another carrier you need to have it unlocked.

Well, I base my question on my experience with an original iPhone. It wasn't in my country yet (bought one in the States) and in order to use my carrier I jailbroke it. I've always owned unlocked versions since so that's why I might be misinformed.

So… No way to use the other carrier? :(

You can have a tethered jailbreak via Redsn0w.
But jailbreaking and unlocking are very different.

The only unlock for that phone is IMEI from carrier who sold it or grey market vendor - and there may not be anyone other than the carrier who can unlock it.

Your friend should have considered the requirement to get his phone unlocked before acting to change carriers
Hopefully it wasn't incorrect info from you which contributed to his dilemma

lol no. He came to me when he had done all the paper and already had the new SIM. "Hey, why don't I have any service?"

Well, bad luck then.

Thanks guys.
