A friend of mine had his cracked iPhone 4 screen replaced in Bangkok. Looks like new.

Now when we speak (I am remote using a lesser phone) I can hear a dial tone - same as when I dial somebody before they pickup. This can go on for a few Seconds, then the connection is OK again.

No sure the new screen was original Apple.

Any idea what that could be?

Sounds like someone did a bad job on repairing the phone.

Or the part wasn't up to standard in the first place.

I just wonder when can cause it? Can the iPhone go into hold or mute?

Yes, maybe it was a cheap or bad part. I'd bring it to Apple and have them replace it If it's still under warranty.

Well, the screen cracked after a drop, I don't think that's covered under warranty. And even if, it's certainly void after that dodgy repair.

Give it a shot anyway, maybe they wont know you had someone try to repair it.
