Still couldn't understand people buying iphone 4 and iphone 3gs as opposed to iphone 4s to save $100 to $200 up front.

Because even the 2.5 year-old 3GS is better then the latest and greatest Crapdroid phone made.

And don't bother telling me how your new Crapdroid is better then an iPhone because since Apple hit the phone market, not one single phone has sold better then the iPhone ...even when Crapdroid's were being given away free at Verizon they couldn't unseat the iPhone.

If you look at the profit margins of most PC manufacturers from their PC hardware business, that Windows "strategy" does not look that much like a winning strategy for those manufacturers currently.
It really depends on what portion of the price of the total hardware purchase is dedicated to the Windows license itself.

Cheap is anything in the monthly basket that doesn't take their maxed out credit card(s) over limit before payday. Not all, but given the profits of credit card companies from credit card interest, a vast percentage of consumers are stupid and/or completely failed by any educational system. They wouldn't know an NPV calculation if it hit them in the face.

Unfortunate.

I have an aunt who likes cheaper prices for non-essential expenses like mobile phones. She pays less than $500 over the course of two years of service. And yes, that's a lot cheaper than $2,000 in case you're not aware. She doesn't have an iPhone because there is still no way to get such a thing for a cheap price after you add up all the various expenses. You'd be forgiven for thinking anyone with basic math skills should be able to figure that out. Instead we have millions of people claiming that they're picking up "cheap" iPhones with top-dollar service contracts that quickly wipe out whatever discount they think they're getting
An education is a blessing for you and a terrible curse once you come to grips with the rest of the world.

Not at $375. You still have at least another $100 to drop before I would have considered it. I can get a front facing camera and a QVGA display for much less than that.

I had the original iPhone. I loved it. Then I had the iPhone 3G. I loved that as well. But the network service was terrible and over time I couldn't stand to keep handing AT&T (or the Tea Party they fund) any more of my money. At the time AT&T was still the only carrier Apple would sell to in the US, so I was forced to jailbreak my phone and unlock the SIM in order to use it with T-Mobile.

At first everything was great. I had much better voice service and although the data was slower it wasn't so bad that it bothered me. Unfortunately over time each update Apple pushed out made my iPhone slower and slower until it finally became virtually useless.

At that point there was still no way to get an iPhone with either of the lower cost national carriers so I chose an Evo on Sprint's 4G network. It took a while to unlearn the iPhone and branch out into the Android world but over time I became more and more familiar and the Android OS got better and better. The speed of this phone was incredible compared to just about everything else I'd ever used up to this point, including the iPhone 4.

I was still interested in picking up the next iPhone when I heard it was coming to Sprint. Unfortunately Apple didn't provide for any 4G service options so I figured it wasn't worth the effort and cost for a slower speed phone. And that's why I still don't have an iPhone to this very day.

Not everything with Android is crap. Some Android features are behind the Apple equivalents and some are ahead of Apple. As we saw point-blank during the iOS 5 roll-out. Frankly I think the Android tablet market could still use some work, but the phones are not that different from the iPhone these days and most of what I would want to do on an iPhone can be done equally well on my Evo 4G. If the iPhone supported 4G on Sprint I probably would have purchased one, but even without it I'm not hurting for much on my Evo either.

Please read the article would you. It clearly states "U.S. Smartphone Sales in Q3."

Q1 - January, February, and March
Q2 - April, May, and June
Q3 - July, August, and September
Q4 - October, November, December

In other words, the iPhone 4S that you want people to buy, wasn't released in Q3.

I think is says more about Apple marketing and the lack of knowledge by most consumers. All they see is iPhone, I want one.
I "want" a tablet. It is marketed to me all the time. I do not watch much TV anymore but Apple loves to spam their ads in the few occasions that I do. Hell everyone wants to spam their tablet ads at me on TV.

When I actually settle down and think about it, God forbid anyone do that, I do not really "need" a tablet. It is fun for a few minutes of excitement, I do want to pull out my wallet but I snap to my senses, and then I wait again for that next advertising rush.

What you "need" is a DVR. Skip the commercials. Also watch only shows that actually interest you, improve TV for yourself whether you watch a lot or a little.

Everyone needs this, actually.

From my understanding, that's when you bring your own phone. When you buy on subsidy (which the guy I was responding to obviously did with a free iPhone 4), you're still tied for an expensive voice+data contract for a couple of years.

Yet you cheap out of 200$ or so...

No, that includes a free iPhone.

When I said contract it means the same as in the US, and still its half of the price than that in the US.

I have several TV tuners available for Windows Media Center. I just never use them. I make time to watch Meet the Press and 60 Minutes. Anime and DVDs from the library make up the remainder of my media consumption. Spending money to hoard content is crazy when the entire community can benefit from it.

Yet you have banks of money to pay the monthly fee...

My contract is £35 a month... And that's expensive, I could've gone far far cheaper, but wanted the minutes and texts. As already said, contracts are cheaper here than the US, what applies to you doesn't apply to the rest of the world :p

Also to note, when the 3GS came out, it cost me £149 IIRC to "upgrade" to it from being 2 years on the 1st gen, and even then I was charged £44 a month.
