It's not free but there is a program that runs on Windows and Mac called DiskAid that will allow you to do that.

I don't think any of the iPhones have ever had a mass storage option unless you jailbreak.

You can buy a good size USB thumb drive for $20 anyway.

You can use something like GoodReader to connect via a wifi address and then transfer files back and forth to a computer... not sure if this is what you're looking for.
