Since the Windows 7 machine works perfectly with my 'Sky wireless connector' (the rebadged AirTies Air 4400) does this not suggest that the conflict between it and the Airport Express is more likely to be a Win 7 issue rather than a problem with the NIC? But it will be interesting to see if you have any problems although if your Airport Express is wired to your router it doesn't exactly replicate my situation.

Thanks again.

Well AirPort Expresses currently use a Qualcomm Atheros chipset. Most other wireless routers and APs use Broadcom. The new AirPorts like the Extreme and Time Capsule use Broadcom. It is possible the Windows 7 NIC has an issue with Atheros chips. Try using something like a linux live cd and the AirPort Express. You will know really quickly if it is a setting on Windows 7 or the NIC.

AirPorts are generally great! I tried the Windows 7 machine today and it was fine. Had to go in a ceiling to get to one of them but it worked beautifully. Shut down, restart, sleep, voodoo chants all worked fine.

Following your example I brought home a spare Win 7 laptop from the office this evening and lo and behold, it connects perfectly with the Airport Express and gets internet access on wakening from sleep, from hibernation and on a restart. I couldn't check the voodoo chants though but I assume they are fine as well! So it must indeed be a NIC issue which I shall try and track down.

Many thanks once again.
P.S. The Acer laptop has a Broadcom NIC but not sure what the media PC (an Acer Revo R3610) has.
P.P.S. Just had a quick look and the media PC has an NVIDIA nForce NIC

I would ensure you are using the latest driver. Sometimes default Windows drivers have issues with some clients. I had one machine crashing a TP-Link router. Swapped the NIC driver and all was good.

Try that out and report back! Also, if the OEM doesn't have a new driver then check with the chip manufacturer (e.g. Broadcom).

There was an Nvidia driver update available on the Nvidia web site which I installed but without resolving the problem. I think I'll just give up and use my Airport Express to provide Airplay and an Ethernet connection for my VOIP phone adapter, and stick with the hacked Sky Aireless Connector for my media PC.

Many thanks again for all your suggestions.

No problem. Just so you know, I tried doing a bridge from a computer with an Atheros chip to another manufacturer and the whole NIC disappeared from Windows  . I don't think this is an AirPort or even a Windows issue but rather that manufacturers NICs.
