Hi. One of the features of the iPhone 4, that enticed me to upgrade from my 3GS was the inclusion of a camera flash (finally). I've been hearing people complain that some cases for the iPhone 4 have cutouts that interfere with the flash. Is this simply because the cutouts are too small or does the light from the flash reflect off the glossy plastic in the cutout and ruin the picture? Some people have reported using a sharpie along the edge of the cutout to fix the issue. I know I'm being long winded for such a trivial issue, but I ordered some third party cases and I'm hoping they can still be used without mucking with the flash. Thanks in advance.

That sharpie idea reminds me of what a friend did to his n900. He said the lens cover/slider was making his photos grainy so he coloured it black. Didn't know this was an issue with iPhone cases.

So what's the question? Yes, there are cases that impede on the flash and yes, a sharpie has been used to remedy this issue.

Ha! Sorry. I know my post was a little awkward. I guess I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with this issue and if they could tell me just how badly a case can actually impede the flash or picture quality? I ordered a couple of those luminosity cases from the link on this forum and now I'm reading posts about how that particular case has a cutout that doesn't work well with the flash.

use a sharpie, or just live with it. it's not that bad. wait till you get the case then try for yourself, the best judge on what you can tolerate will only be you. Too many people on this forum are so overly citical its quite sickening.

And even that's an understatement. For every user who claims they don't have any scratches on his/her phone, there is one who instructs said user to inspect it under a very bright light. That's not day-to-day use of a phone; it's just being overly critical.

@OP: check out the returns policy of the company you bought the case(s) from. If the case doesn't behave in a way you're happy with with regards to the flash, you may be able to return it. If there is an issue, it might be worth contacting said company anyway so they can remedy it and possibly send you a case from a new batch.

I'm not being critical of the iPhone 4. On the contrary I love it and haven't experienced any of the reported issues. I'm not trying to find fault, but if I was it would be with the third party case manufacturers for not making the cutouts adequate. Apple's design is not in question here ( at least not with me).
