iPhone 4 chat to BB?

Could anyone please advise on the best way that I can use instant messaging between my iPhone 4 and my wife's BB please?

We live in Thailand, and still in the 80's in some respects. SMS's are expensive.

Kik and LiveProfile also. However, they continuously run in the background on BB phones, so they havent caught on as much since they can be a battery drain.
