clicking noise from back of iphone 4

I had a clicking noise from the back of the iphone 4. top rear on volume mute side. the clicking got worse when the phone was hot and vanished when cold. rather than book an appointment with apple i fixed it myself.

With a philips #00 20mm cross head removed the two screws at the bottom of the phone, the back slides up and off with ease. Tightened all screws across the top of the phone, only a slight turn especially those in the problem area.

Replaced the back of the phone and the problem has gone. The back of the phone feels firmer when hot. I suspect that the plastic has warped slightly when constantly heating and cooling introducing very slight gaps internally. Apple may swap your device out, but I bet this is all they do to resolve the issue.

Worked for me, took 3 mins... good as new.

I too have had this issue. Took it to Apple in Bristol (uk) last week, they said the tools had just come in to sort this issue, so presumably they just realigned the back of the phone.

This stopped the clicking - ...until now it has started again in exactly the same place. I'm taking it back to Apple on thursday, and hopefully they will be able to come up with a permanent fix to the problem. Presumably if they didn't have the tools (ie a couple of weeks ago) they'd have just replaced the iphone.

What have others experiences been with apple stores regarding this issue?

Tools? what a philips screwdriver #00 20mm that you can get from any computer repair shop... what a lot of rubbish... honestly spend the £3 on the screwdriver and do it yourself... easier then going to the apple store and having the pcworld grade staff work on your phone.

You're probably right regarding the tools they used. However they didn't fix it properly therefore I will take it back (and keep doing so) until they have.
At the end of the day Apple should he able to sort this out, I shouldn't have to use a screwdriver on a phone I've spent £499 on!

There was another post about this already and it sounded like a problem with the individual iphone. I can't remember the thread, but the guy said it was something close to the volume rocker.

I'd notify Apple and then once the madness subsides, arrange for an exchange.

Good luck! :)

i'm having the same problems where i hear the clicking/cracking sounds on the backing near the volume controls.

i'm planning to drop by the apple store to have it checked. would you know by any chance if they also do exchanges even without the apple protection plan coz i didn't get one. =/

thanks!

You guys are life savers :) Had been having the same clicking problem on the back for a whille and was considering taking phone back as it was annoying.

Was weighing up the fact that I LOVE my phone and have had none of the reported issues except this one. So. Found a little screwdriver that came from a christmas cracker & just thought I'd try it for size. Before I knew it the back was off, screws checked, back reinserted and hey presto no clicky back!!

I think it was the little clips that needed reseating - only one screw needed tightening and that was on the bottom of the phone. :D

Hi all. Looking for your advice on if I should seek a replacement iPhone. I got my preorder iPhone on Wednesday, and have been using it ever since. Yesterday, a day later, I noticed it was making a clicking noise when I applied a slight amount of pressure with my finger tip to the back of the phone, sort of the midway point from top to bottom and towards the left side of the phone. It's easily reproducible and starting to drive me nuts as i can hear it with just about any touch I make on the phone.

So, am I the only one with this problem? If so, I'm headed to talk to Apple ASAP.

Same exact thing but toasted the right! What should I do?!

I knwo this thread is old, but I've noticed this clicking on my 4S too. It's about 1cm southwest from the "iPhone" text. Should I try to return the phone?

Don't bother trying to return it, take it to an Apple store, they'll open the back make an adjustment, and it'll be good as new. Took them about 1 or 2 minutes with my original iPhone 4 to fix it... Haven't noticed the problem with my 4S though.

No u have no problem about the clicking ur hear coz i tried so many and all of them are the same , the noise u hear it's the vibration of the sound , so no worry at all it's normal

same clicking sound with pressure toward one side of the phone in the middle.

iphone4s. it doesnt do it all the time. i think temperature has something to do with it as the phone contracts/expands.

where can i buy this screw driver online? it's the two tiny ones on the bottom near the speakers right?

Old thread, but i just bought a second-hand iPhone 4S and to the right of the Apple logo I too have the clicking sound. Which is annoying. Do you think it's worth to try and open it? And how?
