I had wondered it there was electro-motor forces at play when my iPhone wandered - so I powered it off. Even fully powered down, it still crept along surfaces, especially carpet and cushions.

I also 2nd the notion that the gyro in this device is too small to have any appreciable effect.

Another strike against the gyro theory - is that my phone stopped doing it after the oleophobic coating wore off. It now stays put on the same surfaces it used to wander across.

I read up a bit more on oleophobic coatings, and it turns out it makes an excellent lubricant. Figure that cushions suck up oils from people over time and retain them. (and most people don't launder their furniture) The table in question (should it be near a kitchen) almost certainly has a small layer of grease on the surface.

As for the pic request, someone send me a brand new iPhone and I'll gladly document this for you. ;) Though pics won't do it much justice, because these things slide at a pace that would make a snail impatient.

Unbalanced desk not noticeable to the naked eye or even the room could be slightly...very slightly tilted (not leveled) as well, which could be the cause. ;)

Ha, ha, a tilted room and the only thing that moves is an iPhone?

Something is really weird about this....

I would always leave my iPhone 4 (no case) on my FLAT wooden table(tested with level) and it would CONSTANTLY end up on the floor. The first 20 times it happened I just kept convincing myself that I must have somehow knocked it off (even though each time I swore I hadn't touched the table) or thought that maybe I was getting a text and somehow it was vibrating off the table (even though I never had a text, an email, nothing) also every time I would go to my mothers house(she also has iPhone 4) I would hear her iPhone hit the floor and I would wonder how she could keep knocking the darn thing over! Well eventually this drives me crazy enough to where I put the phone toward the edge of my table, and just stared at it and sure enough it SLOWLY, very slowly, crept to the edge of the table and fell off!! I have no clue HOW this is happening but would love to know how since I hold this thing to my head everyday:p

You must have never played beer pong.

What's with all the cynics?

OP - this has happened to me twice. It puzzled me initially, but I assume the slippery nature of the phone was to blame. I was lucky both times it had a soft landing...
