iPhone 4 Experiences 'Self Combustion' Aboard Just-Landed Aircraft

The TSA will amend its rules for carrying cellphones onto airlines flights: As with other banned liquids, if you have one at the TSA security line, it will be confiscated.

And while people have been way too compliant about allow the TSA to do all sorts of crap out of FUD, I wonder if this will finally push the envelope to get the public to push back against all the stupid stuff they pull for FUD.

I have a feeling that they'd have a much harder time enforcing this or getting this pushed through than the other crap they try to pull.

Hopefully. THen again people have been sheep on what they have allowed the TSA to get away with. I have a feeling though even the sheep will fight back on that one...

Hi it has one of those cheap knockoff back panels with the Steve Jobs logo on it. Most likely not a coincidence. Find it funny none of these news sites have noticed that.

Is it just me, or does the logo on the back of the iPhone look like the Steve Jobs Silhouette version of the Apple Logo?

I thought so too. Also, the agency logos are messed up in the middle. I could swear even by looking at mine that this is all in the glass.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the user was a little rough with his phone, may have even dropped it just before take off and turning it back on for the first time after landing caused the combustion.

Although, could just be the new iPhone4 killswitch to get iPhone4 users to upgrade to a 4s, yes catching fire to your users is the perfect way to say "I love you" this holiday season.

Whichever seems more logical.

Just unfortunate. I would imagine this guy will be contacting Apple. Btw wouldn't some batteries have an expansion issue depending on altitude? Could it be that this iPhone Battery had a defect in it from the factory that combined with the altitude change caused it to malfunction?

Maybe somehow the user perforated the lithium battery with the 'glass' shatter.

Personally, I'm gonna write it off as One Of Those Things. It's not so much a widespread manufacturing defect as it is, well, what you get when you make a battery that uses a flammable chemical. You know, like all cell phones made by everybody. And cars. And a bunch of other things.

But to be on the safe side...

:slowly takes phone out of pocket:

...damn thing is, like, 8 inches from my NUTS! Can't risk that!

Apple. Keeping you warm during those cold Winter months.

Most probable explanation:

The passenger forgot to put his iPhone in airplane mode and the iPhone/iPhone battery was working on overdrive looking for a signal. It finally had enough by the time the plane landed and combusted.

iPhone's are da bomb.

PS: If you think over charging / charging with higher voltage is causing it: I don't think so. I almost always charge with the 10W iPad charger and so far (9 months) my iPhone does not show a sign of wear on the battery. It doesn't even get that hot (though it gets a little warmer when charging).

The iPad charger doesn't have "higher voltage"; both the iPad and the iPhone charge at 5 volts.

This is my friend. It happened to him on friday and pasted it on his facebook not long after it happened. The phone was actually still off as he was still sitting in his seat on the aircraft as it had just landed in sydney. It just started smoking in his hand and getting really hot and then self combusted in his lap. pretty crazy, the stewardess ran for a fire extinguisher he said, normal protocol.

Does your friend have red hair? Aka fire crotch.

This is obviously a terrorist attack attempt by Al Qaeda. I'm sure the TSA will respond by more vigorous and though cavity searches and by checking everyone's junk even more closely.

(I know cavity searches and "package checks" have nothing to do with an iPhone issue but this is the TSA we're talking about)

Did you make this account just to post this? Honestly they won't recall it until a few more phones explode, which seems very unlikely.

It is possible that the plane was depresurized to quickly and caused this, but if that were the case, then other phones on that plane would have exploded also.

Rex is a regional airline servicing small airports and mining towns. The plane may have been a small unpressurized member of their fleet.

I've heard of the iPhone 4 being snappier but this is ridiculous.

Last time I checked this airline is not subject to any TSA regulation.

Whatever happened, it probably didn't have much to do with cabin pressurization.

If I were to guess, I'd say it's a incredibly small defect in the battery itself. No one can mass produce anything perfectly over and over again. What probably happened is this one guy happened to get a battery that just wasn't quite perfect. Might've had a near microscopic flaw somewhere on it that managed to slip past inspection, and got worse over time due to heat and use.

In other words, These Things Happen. It's One Of Those Things.
