I am leaving to supervise young adults in a few weeks for World Youth Day (Catholic Woodstock).I have a AT&T iPhone 4. I was wondering if I could purchase a sim card from Europe and pop in into my iPhone 4. I have heard in the past about people doing this. I will be visiting Ireland, France, and Spain. Thanks for the help in advance.

Yes you can do that.

If the iPhone 4 is factory unlocked (recently released by Apple for the US), he can do it. If not, I'm afraid the iPhone 4 is locked to AT&T; therefore the OP can only use an AT&T microsim unless you use Gevey to unlock it.

You are correct.

I forgot about the locked/unlocked situation.

Since you don't seem like the technically proficient type or have an unlockable baseband, buy a gevey supreme/ultra sim and a sim cutter.
When you're in europe, go to vodaphone, orange, o2, etc. and ask them for a pay as you go sim. You can always ask if they have it in micro sim size. However, it's likely they won't. If they do, you won't have to deal with the cutting.
Cut the sim with the cutter and follow the instructions that came with the gevey.

Thanks so much. Try watching 150 teenagers for two weeks I will need my phone in case I need to contract the authorities. I am pretty technically proficient but do not know much about the iPhone hardware.

You can pick up micro sims from the retail network outlet shops in the Uk.

Some insist you top up a minimum amount at the same time.

As for unlocking why not ask your network provider for the unlock sequence.

In the Uk it costs a small fee of around £20 to have the fone unlocked on a payg contract.

A monthly contract is usually free.

Your then open to use any micro sim you want in the future.

AT&T will not unlock iPhones. Period.
