I think Apple named it the iPhone 4 so that it would be an easy transition to the iPhone 4g naming convention. Add the g, then the GS. 4g will really catch on next year.
 
Errrr no, iPhone finally got themselves out of the mess they created when they named the iPhone 3G. I think they won't go to that again.
 
I agree with others, Apple made a mess when when it named the 3G

It began to fix it's mess with it named the 3GS

so that the next choice would be 4, simple and to the point.

It's the 4th iteration, so 4 makes sense, a nice short name.
 
4g will be too small on all carriers. 2012 will be 4g just like the 2g didn't have 3g but 3g was around
