I was very polite and professional
Uh I doubt that because ....

My plan is to bring it in again tomorrow, set it on the counter. Then I'll calmly pull out a small hammer and smash it a few times, and then dunk it in some gatorade. Then I'll pay the $150 for a refurb.

Of that.
How's that sound?
Like a terribly stupid idea that resembles that of a spoiled child.

Unfortunately, their "no free phone" thing seems to be sporadic at best based only on claims on this site and the actual Apple discussion boards. I think it really is luck of the draw. Because it simply stopped working I too would be annoyed (I think I would be more adult about it though) and wonder why it was that they wouldn't consider a straight swap.

You don't have to smash it your iphone is just fine.
just be patient.

I'm sure that your iphone just has a software problem.
so what you need to do is just to reset your iphone by holding Power + Home keys together for about 12 seconds, and you should see the screen flashes then the apple logo will appear.
Keep holding it until the itunes logo appear.
After that, just plug your iphone to your PC/Mac, and do a fresh restore with latest version of iOS.

and that should do it

I've had this problem a month ago, and my iPhone 4 is 2yrs old.

I hope that will solve the problem
