So, I'm flip-flopping between TomTom and Navigon, so wondering who has the best Traffic Updates (I know both are subscription). Any thoughts appreciated. This will be mainly used in the DC area.

I've only tried TomTom traffic, but it has gotten me out of a pinch when I was running late for a meeting, I would have spent 45 minutes on 395 in Alexandria/Arlington.

I went with this same difficult decision in January. I wish reviews would be updated more frequently!

I was between Navigon and TomTom. I ultimately went with TomTom. One of the main reasons was because I had a 3G and I've heard lots of horror stories about lagginess with navigon on the 3G. I didn't want to spend nearly 100 bucks (at the time) on something that was going to frustrate me more than anything.

I think honestly you can't go wrong either way. Although Navigon regions can be a real steal. Honestly I'm kinda wishing I had gotten my region back when it was only like 15 bucks, just so I could compare the two.

I own Navigon and wish I went with TomTom - I primarily use GPS for traffic avoidance and TomTom beats Navigon in that department hands down....

For instance (for those in the DC area) Navigon never shows 50 backed up and always tries to route me onto it while I know TomTom will show it with traffic.

Thanks. I have a TomTom standalone so happy with the product. If the Quality of the traffic is better then that to me is more essential. Much appreciated.

I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a navigation app without being able to try them out. So right now I have MotionX (.99) and CoPilot (4.99). I really like the aesthetic of CoPilot, especially more than MotionX. However, I have been extremely disappointed in CoPilot when it comes to Point of Interest searches. I have wanted to just try out the apps so as I drove around town I plugged in different stores to use on apps.

Best Buy, Staples, AT&T Store, Apple Store, and a car dealership were my destinations. CoPilot had none of these locations in my searches. All of these places have been located in the same buildings for years. While CoPilot couldn't find a single one of them, MotionX accurately and quickly found every single one.

If the GPS app I'm using cant find major retail chains like this, then I really can't see myself using it. From reading reviews I think TomTom sounds like its pretty good, but I can't see it being worth $50 when MotionX does pretty well for $1. Navigon sounds pretty good too, but $30 for just 1/3 of the US or $80 for the full US is way to much for me.

I *WISH* CoPilot worked better at routing. For $4.99 with Turn-by-Turn Voice it should be a steal +2.99 get's you TTS (for street names). I don't have issues with CoPilot finding POI's, it's simply the routing is really wacky.

MotionX has an option for "fastest" and it works. It found my "secret" back way to work and routed me. CoPilot had me going out of the way (way out of the way) in some of the worst traffic areas, no matter what option I chose.

Additionally, CoPilot can find my POI's but it will simply drop me off in the middle of the street -- it doesn't say "You destination is on the left..." Instead, it'll say "You've reached your destination -- in the middle of an intersection! Where exactly is my destination!

I just hate that MotionX charges $14.99/y for voice guidance. It also seems to load maps on the fly -- which is great as long as you have a strong signal. But, two years of that is still cheaper than TomTom.

I'm keeping both for the next month to see how they work. I may wind up with Navigon or TomTom afterwards, though.:)

relying on iphone for navigation? might want to consider getting a real navigation system instead. they are much cheaper than an iphone + its service plan.

I have Tom Tom, it worked OK, nothing fantastic. I wished I had chose Navigon or Magellan - both are more polished and just look better. Navigon offers more features and a one time $20 traffic fee whereas Tom Tom is a yearly fee I believe (can also be monthly).

As long as it gets you where you need to go, I dont think you can go wrong. Given that I bought Tom Tom when it was $39 it seemed to be a good trade off, but after thinking about it I now want something else but dont want to have to pay for another app since the one I have is functional.

Those with CoPilot issues, are you using the $20 app with full maps? That is the one I have and it has been wonderful. Maybe there is a difference with the app with full maps.

I have Navigon and use it all over the country as I travel 70% for work. It has been pretty much flawless for me and others that have both say it beats TomTom in the voice department and graphic. I don't use the traffic info though so if thats important TomTom may be better.

I've used both Copilot and MotionX GPS Drive. The former has more features and a little slicker interface, but the latter has better maps, searches, and routing. Since I use navigation intermittently, I chose MotionX and just pay for the months that I need to use voice guidance. Of course, you need a connection for maps (though frequently used maps get cached). The 3D view has been fixed for iPhone 4.
