About a no commitment iPhone 4...
If you bought an iPhone 4 without commitment could you still use Skype with just WiFi? I suppose you wouldn't be able to use the GSM service for VoIP unless you signed up with AT&T. So, don't they have a "Pay As You Go" plan for iPhone 4? Also, what about buying an iPhone 4 from say the Australian store when it's available over there? I think they might sell iPhones unlocked. Basically I'm trying to find out a way around AT&T while still being able to use the GSM service so I can eliminate monthly telephone bills. I have no problem paying for Skype calls as they are much more reasonable.

There isn't a pay go iPhone 4. People who have prepaid iPhones are either using a pay go SIM from a 3 year old iPhone 2G or using another type of AT&T prepaid SIM with an unlimited data package on it.

I'm using a pay go prepaid 2G iPhone SIM in a 3GS and I want to buy a no commitment iPhone 4 and cut down my SIM.

It will still be locked to AT&T, you would have to hope/wait for a jailbreak and unlock solution.

@carlos- seems good to hear and also imposible because apple retail store in US is not selling w/o ATT contract.

Im referring to ATT no commitment offer. anyone bought from this offer?

Who told you this? You are WRONG! Please do not spread misinformation!

The Apple retail stores ARE selling iPhone 4s with or without contract. You tell them which you want. I am on the iPhone 4 reservation list and I told them I want to purchase no commitment. The sales person quoted me $699 price for the 32GB.

I have a feeling you are confusing no contract price with unlocked. The Apple retail store is will sell iPhone 4s WITHOUT a contract but the phones are locked to AT&Ts network. They are not unlocked.

"No Commitment- Any customer who wants to purchase iPhone 4 without signing a new two-year agreement may do so at the no commitment price. An eligible voice and data plan are required, and purchase limits apply."

from ATT FAQ.

we all know all iphone 4 in the US are locked. so im asking if what is the best plan to get if im not willing to stay with ATT network. of course i will wait for the unlock before I can use it to other netwrok. Stated above they stil require us to have an eligable voice and data plan.

Find someone who has AT&T and have them purchase one for your for full price.

I got an email telling me I have 24 hours to pick up an iPhone 4 at the Apple Retail store on 14th street. I'm going to wait and buy one the first week of August. Let me know if you want the one reserved for me.

You just must have an AT&T Wireless ACCOUNT to buy a no-commitment iPhone. I think that's where everyone is getting confused.

You can't walk in and buy one if you are not a current AT&T Wireless Subscriber. If someone walked in and bought one who is not an AT&T Wireless subscriber it was in error and the person who sold it could be fired on the spot as it violates Company policy.

You are confusing "contract" with "subsciber," While one may or may not be UNDER A CURRENT CONTRACT you MUST be a current AT&T Wireless SUBSCRIBER to get the phone at the non-commitment price. I walked into an Apple store and paid full retail with no problem but I needed to show photo ID and have them verify I currently am an existing AT&T Wireless subscriber. I am currently out of my contact which means I ALSO had the option to pay $199 for the phone if I was willing to extend for another 2 years which I was not because the iPhone was being purchased as a gift and I didn't want to lose MY cheap upgrade with AT&T.

Yes, the above is correct. They won't allow the phone to leave the store without having a current account. I plan on doing this in the next month or two to buy a white iPhone 4.

@SpaceKitty,TB07-NJ- THANK YOU FOR YOUR CLARIFICATION. Thats the point I want to clarify.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

Good thing you both are educated enough to very much explain the confusion.
Unlike the TS who I presumed cannot understand English terms. Its a pitty Im not American but now I realized that not all Americans have wide knowledge of the English vocabulary. I think the brain of carlos is not functioning well.

I feel he is now hiding under the sheet and ashamed to show up and defend his small brain!

HAHAHAHAHAHA

Hi, I'm confused too. I want to buy at the no-commitment price but when I called the Apple store and asked them, they said I had to sign a new two year agreement if I want to buy an iPhone 4 regardless of whether I paid full price or not. I just want to get the iphone 4 for my wife even though her upgrade is not due until November. Perhaps I didn't use the special key words "no-commitment" and instead used "full-price". Who knows. Anyone else have this conflicting info from the Apple Store? Thanks.

If you want official unlocked iPhone 4s - then get them here:

Canada
UK
France
Belgium
Hong Kong
Australia

I know for sure UK, Hong Kong and Australia you can just buy the phones without a contract and they are officially unlocked. UK/Australia you can pick them up from an Apple store. In Hong Kong, Apple only have online shopping, but you may be able to get them through other retail channels - ie. authorised retailers.

Not sure about France / Belgium selling them without a contract. By local laws, the phones in these 2 countries have to be unlocked, however whether you can get them without a contract is a different matter which I am not sure about.

Add Singapore to the list. All phones in Singapore are unlocked, including subsidized iPhones.

Could be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that you need to prove residency in the country you're purchasing from. Or is that only for a contract? So if I popped into Canada I could walk out of an Apple Store with a full price iP4, no questions asked?

Is it possible to avoid this requirement? According to the fine print on the iPhone 4 page in the apple store...

"For those who are not eligible for an early upgrade or who wish to buy iPhone as a gift, the prices are $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB)."

So technically couldn't someone just claim that they are buying it as a gift? Then they wouldn't need to be subscribers?

It is in the first post. $599/699 plus TAX.

More importantly, it is locked to ATT, it will NOT work on any other network.
