My iPhone 4 when I am on the phone, people can only hear me talking when I put it on speakerphone. This was a preorder launch release so I a stuck with warranty. I have babied is phone the entire time. Always in a case, never dropped, no liquid etc...

Any tips?

Thanks

Try to hard reboot and see if it fixes the problem. Also, see if you can plug/unplug the head phone several times so it works.

If not, then you have to replace the head phone flex cable.

Did hard reset and multiple reboots with no luck. Been using headphone jack in car for a few days so I don't think that will fix it.

How hard is it to fix the head phone flex cable? Is that what makes the microphone work so people can hear me talk?

It took me 35 minutes last time I fixed it on my brother phone. I just the tutorial from Ifixit.com and it was not hard at all.

This flex has nothing to do with your microphone. The reason you can't hear anything because it think the headphone jack is plug in. So, either you plug in the head phone to talk or turn on speaker when you talk to people.

I can hear fine. When I am talking, the people cannot hear me on their phone unless I switch to speakerphone. I ever tried using canned air to blow out the mic areas if it was dirt/dust

OK well it is slightly better. People can hear me now, but complain of echo's, and overall bad quality. What can I do about that? Would a restore of the phone do anything?

I just fixed my friend's iPhone 4... I took a pair of standard headphones, plugged them into the iPhone, called someone who knew what I was doing, and then while I was talking into the phone I unplugged the headphones, and voila! The iPhone normal microphone works again!

I had the same issue - i finally figured out on my own how to correct (at least it worked for me). i recall using my headphones with the iphone a few weeks ago & i hit the button on the side which flips up/down to turn on the vibrate function. So i tried this & it worked.
i plugged in my headphones
called my cell
flipped the button on the side then pulled out the headphones & it started ringing & seemed to work.

if that doesn't work, keep trying to call it & when in a call plug in then unplug the headphones

I repair Iphones and ran into this problem yesterday on a customers phone. People could hear him only if he was on speakerphone. The mic that people hear your voice is located at the bottom opposite speaker. It is only headphone flex if there are no headphones plugged in and increasing volume shows headphone volume on screen versus ringer volume increasing. The problem was resolved by replacing dock connector/mic assembly. Its possible to replace without removing board if you have experience. If not, ifixit.com has great tutorials. Part is available on ebay for about $15 USD. I replaced part on customers phone and problem solved. In less common instances it can be motherboard itself. Hope this helps.

Hey,

My phone has been having the same problem--caller cannot hear me unless I use speakerphone. Will Apple make the necessary repairs for free if the phone is under a year old??? I have taken great care of my phone and am not sure how the speaker could be broken...

Iphone 4 microphone problems

If you have Apple Care on your phone, you can have Apple send you a new phone, however, the new phone may have the same issues as the one you wish to return. I know because just today I received the brand spanking new Verizon iPhone 4...and am still having problems. Seems I don't know HOW to talk on the this phone without using the speakerphone so that my callers can hear me. Is it Verizon? Is it Apple? Is it me?
