The people who complain don't get the point of this thread. It's not just that it's the default wallpaper, but also (correct me if I'm wrong, OP) a large part of the iPhone 4's public face. And it's uninspired and unattractive.

Exactly. And yes it'sno big deal. I'm just mentioning this.

Well this one, for instance, states something:

It states something all right: you only want to use 20% of the screen to display actual information.

If anything the introduction of backgrounds to iOS4 has shown me that most visually stimulating images that people would want as backgrounds tend to distract and interfere with using the foreground.

I guess the answer to the OP's question is: the backgrounds that Apple chose are lame only if you don't care to use your iphone for anything except as a showpiece. Though that also seems to be why the majority of jailbreakers who aren't interested in tethering end up jailbreaking: the bling factor.

Those of us who actually use our devices for the purpose of being productive, tend to not care about the background a whole heck of a lot. To each his own, I guess.

I've always hated the Leopard grass wallpaper and the green light it gave off in the room. Good thing it was temporary.

Something more vibrant will just be distracting when you actually use the phone. I actually thought the default wallpaper was too distracting compared to black background when I first had iOS 4 on my 3GS, but then I got used to it. It's better with the retina display of the iP4 though.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A400 Safari/6531.22.7)

Who cares what the stock wallpaper looks like, make your own wallpapers to use, it's simple enough.

I always felt that vibrant colors and designs made the screen more difficult to read and navigate through your apps. I think single color apps are easier on the eye. I believe they weren't going for flashy-in-your-face backgrounds so it didn't take away from the design of the phone itself. A grey background also lets the apps really stand out from the background.

Yea I'm not at all fond of the default rain-drops-on-glass wallpaper. oh well, really not something I would have made a thread complaining about.

I don't think it's unattractive. Majority of the wallpapers posted by users on this forum (in that wallpaper thread) 95% of those wallpapers are garabage. They look so awful with the icons. Apple's choice is actually a contrast.

In relation to sales and marketing, Apple are pretty selling every iPhone they can manufacture at the minute, not to mention the high sales of previous models which only had a black background. So I'm pretty sure it has little to no effect on the matter. I do get what your trying to say though, it's nothing spectacular, but it's not really that important.

I think people think more of "I can probably change the wallpaper on this" versus the old black wallpaper. They won't be thinking "that wallpaper is so lame, and I probably can't change it, and it sucks".

its a very ugly wallpaper and design.....i was initially very surprised because visual design is Apple's strong suit.

Apple thinks the most important part of the iPhone is its apps.

The default wallpaper is designed to make the app icons really pop and stand out no matter which apps you've loaded. It's just grey enough and just plain enough that nothing will get lost against it.

That's a great goal for a default wallpaper. I'll entertain other ideas for a better default, but that grass is most definitely NOT better for that purpose. I'm sure there are better options out there, but no one has shared one here yet.

Until I see one I'll have to say that the droplets are the best option.

I don't think that analyzing it gives it more sense. They just failed and that's it.
To people saying that we can change it afterwards. Sure. But why Apple takes such care in the boxes for instance? I mean, unboxing an Apple product is like porn. Go unbox a Dell box and you'll see the difference.
So all I'm saying is that for a company who takes such care in all the little details, I think that the wallpaper could have been better.
Let's see if they'll change it next year :)
