Twice in 1 week I dropped my iphone 4 from my tool pouch from a roof down to concrete - in an otter box
(I had broken my holster and waiting for replacement)

First drop didn't hurt a thing
Second one caused people on other end of a call to ask me to speak up as they couldn't hear me very well

Went to store and told them what I had done and asked what suggestions they have (expecting I would hear I have to cough up $200)
Swapped phones with me
Gotta love Apple...

was it still under warranty ?

I heard its a proximaty Sensor issue, which is why its random.

 Now bare with me!, the "quick fix" is to shake the phone really really hard, at least a good distance of about 6"-12".

It re-sets the sensor, just like doing the "figure eight" motion to re-set the GPS orientation location.

Works a treat.

If you want to "break the warently" you can open up the phone and stick a thin piece of sponge between the sencer and the board... but I will stress, I personally wouldn't recommend doing this. A good shake does the trick ;)

Problem solved

I recently installed a new back cover. This was the problem. I thought since I also cracked the front cover the next day that it was a damaged part, However, there seems to be a short somewhere. If I take the back cover off, it works fine. When on, the voice Out (on Calls ONLY) does not work. But I can squeeze the back on and move it a little and make my voice start working again to be heard on the other end.
I think there is a connection between the back and the inside that is not working or a bad line up/ match up to a part.
Hope that helps someone.
