You can use whatever line is eligible and then transfer that phone whichever number you want. You still start the two year commitment on the number you used to upgrade but it doesn't matter which phone is on which number. I did this last year when I used my wife's upgrade for my line. Her number shows her number is eligible in November and mine is eligible now.
