iphone 4 photos wont sync thru itunes

i have an iphone 4 running on 4.2.1 jb and when i back up my phone my photos wont sync. is there something that i need to do to get the photos off my phone and on to my computer?

Mac has image capture and windows has a copycat version that'll d/l the photos to the location of choice.
