Went onto the UK store at about 9.15, selected the phone, checked out and order confirmed.
Just been on now and it seems to have the error message.

And I thought about doing that as well after much the same experience, but I didn't want AT&T to process my transaction till I picked it up and that wasn't an option from them. I don't need them to place a hold on funds for the next 10 days that I can use elsewhere!🙂
Don't use Internet Explorer at apple.com you will get stuck waiting for the ATT site. I waited an hour before I gave up and used Google chrome.
