The Iron Throne
Hoping someone can give me some insight on this. My iPhone 4 started acting wonky a couple of days ago. While using it, the screen would suddenly have a bunch of white lines and the screen would slowly fade out to completely white. The power button didn't bring it back on. When I tried a hard reset, it would reboot to the apple logo (normal looking screen with apple logo), but then freeze/get stuck in a reboot loop.

The only thing that worked was restoring it. I was able to do this using someone else's computer, as I'm on vacation at the moment. It worked for a little bit, and then I started getting black screen blank outs instead of white. Sometimes hard resets worked to bring it back, sometimes I had to restore.

The second day, the screen fade outs continued despite multiple restores, and just now it happened again, except this time the screen now has a white ring around the edges. Even when rebooting/restoring, the full screen is no longer black. It's hard to explain, but pictures are attached.

My main questions are - has anyone ever had this happen, or know what the issue is? When I restored that first time, I updated the to the latest firmware. It's not jailbroken, and at this point it seems like a hardware issue instead of a software issue. I had this phone replaced by Apple in October 2010, but I guess the warranty doesn't reset, as the serial is showing out of warranty (I bought my original on launch day).

Any help or thoughts are appreciated. I am attaching pictures.

And...now the white ring is gone. This is so bizarre. The screen is completely back to normal - full black around the edges, etc.

Still blanks out, though.

Go pay for a new screen.. It's a lot of money but that has got to be a hardware issue.

I'm just going to go the Apple Store when I get home from vacation. It's not long out of warranty. I'll see if they're feeling generous, and if not, I'll do some convincing until they are.

No white ring, but I've had fading screen and power cycling also!

Howdy -

Just in the past few days, I've had sporadic instances of restarting/power-cycling/fading screen as well.

The strangest part is the fading screen. It's a slow (2-3 second) fade to black, followed by a restart, with a weird pattern of lines that briefly appears in the interim. In all the years I've had an iPhone, I've never seen the screen *fade* out before. It's very weird.

Some days, I have no problems at all - other days I can barely use the phone.

This has only been happening in the last week.

Sorry I can't help you. My issue ended up happening sporadically for the last few weeks. Restoring/leaving it off for awhile fixed it temporarily, but the time between flake outs was decreasing. Then I was at a wedding and my screen went totally white and the silent buzzer stayed on - nothing would turn the phone off. I took the battery out and made an Apple Store appointment.

Luckily for me, they were great and replaced the phone with no hassles. Great customer service, per usual. I'd take it in if I were you.

I too have a same problem please help me rectify it.... plzzzz

This thread is 2 1/2 years old. Who knows if the OP is even an active member anymore.

Fortunately the OP gave the solution to his problem:

You'll probably need to replace your screen or logic board.
