Actually if I had to choose a phone based on looks I would go with the N9... but I'm not that shallow to judge a phone based on looks alone 😉

Because it's very comfortable in the hand, as well as in the pocket. It might not look as good but it feels way better, and most people would prefer to have a phone that's comfortable to use that one that they can stick in a gallery for people to look at.

There is a difference between aesthetics vs ergonomics.

Aesthetically, iPhone 4 arguably is more pleasing to the eye than the iPhone 3's which uses a plastic back and both chrome and back scratch easier. Check the Apple logo to know what I mean. Even the volume buttons and mute switch are more solid on the 4. Easier to customize or replace the battery with the screws underneath. But the 3's are easier to grip and more comfortable to hold. But just because it is easier to drive a Honda doesn't make it prettier than a Ferrari.

Personally I love how the iPhone 4 looks but I have modified mine by polishing the antenna band to a mirror finish which I think looks awesome, subtle but great, can't get any photos of mine as my only camera is my iPhone bit it's basically as per this thread :

Fair enough, I tend to notice most people say they like the 3GS because it's more comfortable, but honestly I don't see why the iPhone 4 is so uncomfortable to some in the first place. Yes, I know it's rectangular with edges unlike the 3GS but it's not uncomfortable at all, really.
