Over the weekend for some reason my phone decided it didn't want to ring and play systems sounds anymore. I've been googling around without much success (yet) so I decided (like so many others have) to post the details here and see if maybe someone knows the magic.

I know it's out of warranty (unless there is a secret one) so I'm reluctant to take it to a Genius Bar...but will if I can't resolve this soon.
And I'm not going to upgrade to a 4s with the 5 release being so close, I'd almost rather find a cheap or free 3Gs.

Symptoms
- No system sounds will play - lock, unlock, keyboard
- Behaves like the phone is on mute (it's not) with texts, emails and calls triggering the vibrator
- Speakers work for Audio playback of video and music
- The Volume Buttons and Mute switch do nothing. No overlays show up.
- Earbuds work to change volume
- Bluetooth keyboard works to change volume
- Alarms will chime
What I've tried
- Cleaning the headset jack
- Repeated insertion / remove of a mini plug into the jack.
- Repeated switching on/off of the mute switch
- Opened the phone to see if there was anything obvious, removed the battery and re-installed it. (duh)
- Upgraded to the latest OS
- Did the backup, erase all, restore "to new" procedure
